Who can join PowerHockey Toronto?

The amazing thing about this sport is that truly anyone who uses a power wheelchair in their everyday life and is 13 years of age or older can play! Regardless of disability, age, gender, everyone is welcome and if you want to play, you can.

How much does it cost to register?

The registration fee is $40 for the 2024-2025 season. The fee includes the regular season and playoffs, as well as a jersey. We also have an awards banquet once the season ends, although tickets are sold for this at an additional cost.

What do I need to play powerhockey?

Every player is required to have their own power wheelchair and use it in their daily life. Manual wheelchairs and scooters are not permitted. Players are also required to have their own stick and safety glasses, although we can certainly provide suggestions to you as to what to get and where.

I’m new to sports, is this really competitive?

Don’t worry about being new, we were all new at one time! Just like other sports, we have a house league where everyone comes out and plays to the best of their ability, but most importantly has fun! For those who want to experience the competitive side of the sport they are encouraged to tryout for the tournament team each season and a team is selected to represent the league at a tournament every summer.

I don’t have much or any arm strength, how will I ever hold a stick?

For the players that are unable to hold a stick it’s not an issue at all. Our coaches are well experienced and can attach a stick to your power wheelchair. For our stick-attached players, many use a T-stick which allows them to still be able to control and carry the ball down the floor.

What rules does PowerHockey Toronto use?

We use the North American PowerHockey Association (NAPHA) rules that have had a few additional rules added and adapted for a house league environment, rather than a tournament setting. The rules are similar to ice hockey, however have been adapted to be played in a gym. There’s also a few unique rules such as penalties for ramming and dangerous driving.

What kind of playing surface is powerhockey played on?

Powerhockey is typically played on a hardwood floor in a gymnasium. Sometimes it’s played on a sport court during tournaments. The playing area is 50’x100’.

Is powerhockey dangerous?

Powerhockey is a relatively safe sport and we rarely see injuries. It is a sport with a ball, sticks, and heavy wheelchairs, so players do occasionally get a bump. Safety glasses are mandatory as a precaution for the players. All in all, powerhockey is a safe sport and a lot of fun!
